Privacy is a spectrum

A frosted film and a decorative cling do very different jobs. Before choosing a color, think about who can see your window, from which angle and at what time of day. A street-facing bathroom needs more than a hallway that looks onto a garden.

After dark

Frosted film blurs the view in both directions, day and night, but a silhouette can show when someone is close to the glass. Test the effect in your own lighting before you rely on it for a private room. The stained glass roll is semi private: with a light on inside at night, shapes may still show through.

Every design fits the same way

All five are static cling: they go on clean, smooth, flat interior glass with water, need no glue and peel off without residue. Sizes differ by film, from 11.8 x 39.4 in (30 x 100 cm) to 45.3 in x 16.4 ft (115 cm x 5 m). Work out your roll size.

Checking glass before you order

Static-cling films only stick to clean, smooth, flat interior glass. They will not sit evenly on textured, patterned or damaged panes. If your window has specialty coatings, check your glazing manufacturer warranty before you fit film.

To compare frosted, patterned and mirror options, browse our Privacy window film collection, or explore our Stained glass window film designs if you want color rather than a privacy screen.

Choosing roll widths for panes

Widths and lengths differ by film. Choosing a roll wide enough for your pane avoids unnecessary joins:

  • 11.8 in (30 cm) roll: suits glass up to 10.2 in (26 cm) wide
  • 17.7 in (45 cm) roll: suits glass up to 16.1 in (41 cm) wide
  • 21.7 in (55 cm) roll: suits glass up to 20.1 in (51 cm) wide
  • 45.3 in (115 cm) roll: suits glass up to 43.7 in (111 cm) wide

The blackout film comes 11.8 to 21.7 in (30 to 55 cm) wide, the frosted film 11.8 or 17.7 in (30 or 45 cm) wide and up to 393.7 in (10 m) long, the matte white frost 17.7 to 45.3 in (45 to 115 cm) wide, the stripes 17.7 or 21.7 in (45 or 55 cm) wide, and the stained glass roll is 15.7 x 47.2 in (40 x 120 cm).

For more advice on pane planning, read our How to measure, fit and remove window film guide.

Step-by-step fitting instructions

  1. Clean the interior glass thoroughly, then mist it with water.
  2. Peel off the clear backing and slide the film into place. You can reposition it while it is wet.
  3. Squeegee from the center outward to push out excess water.
  4. Trim to the edge of the glass using a sharp knife, leaving a tiny gap at the frame, then let it settle.

If air bubbles remain, lift that section while wet, mist with water, and smooth again with a soft squeegee. Tiny water pockets settle with time.

Questions

Will it give me privacy at night?

Frosted film blurs the view both ways, day and night, but a silhouette can show when someone is close to the glass. The blackout film is opaque and blocks the view both ways. The stained glass roll is semi private: with a light on inside at night, shapes may still show through.

How much film do I need?

Measure each pane inside the frame and add 0.8 in (2 cm) on every edge. A roll at least that wide avoids joins. Roll lengths run from 39.4 in (100 cm) to 32.8 ft (10 m), depending on the film: a 78.7 in (200 cm) roll gives at least two pieces for panes up to 37.8 in (96 cm) tall, and a single piece for panes up to 77.2 in (196 cm).

Can I remove the film when I move?

Yes. Static-cling film peels off gently from a corner with no adhesive residue. Keep the backing if you want to store it.
