How to choose between contact paper and shelf liner

Start with how much grip you want. Contact paper has a self-adhesive backing, so it stays put on cabinets, shelves and countertops. Shelf liner sits in place with no glue and lifts out when you want to wash it or move it.

For a rental or a fast change, contact paper does more work. Materials and what each one suits

Matte PVC vinyl is the base for most contact paper here. It is waterproof, mildew resistant and wipes clean, which suits kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities and shelf tops. The Matte Solid Peel and Stick Wallpaper uses matte PVC vinyl and works on smooth painted walls, tile and glass. The Wood Grain Self-Adhesive Contact Paper adds an embossed texture for a wood look on the same surfaces.

EVA foam is the base for the liners. It is soft, slightly cushioned and waterproof. The EVA Diamond Grid Shelf and Drawer Liner is 0.04 in (1 mm) thick, so it sits flat in a drawer without lifting the contents. The EVA Foam Drawer and Shelf Liner has an embossed texture and comes in white. The Daisy Print Foam Shelf Liner is white with a daisy print and no glue at all.

PET is the base for the Pink Rose Floral Shelf Liner Roll. It is waterproof and reusable, so it suits shelves that see spills or crumbs.

Care and removal

A quick word on application

Clean the surface first and let it dry. For adhesive paper, peel a short section of backing, press it down, and work outward a few inches at a time. A smooth cloth helps push out air. For liners, cut to size, lay it flat, and smooth it with your hand. No water, no glue, no tools beyond scissors.
