How peel and stick wallpaper works

Each roll is a printed vinyl sheet with adhesive already on the back, protected by a liner. You peel back the top few inches of liner, line the strip up at the ceiling, smooth it down with a plastic smoother and keep pulling the liner away as you work down the wall. There is no paste to mix, no booking time and no soaking, and a strip that goes on crooked can be lifted and placed again while the adhesive is fresh.

The vinyl face wipes clean with a damp cloth, which makes it a good fit for hallways, home offices and bedrooms where traditional paper scuffs.

Choosing a print

The prints in this collection fall into two families. The wildflower and rose papers are full color, painted-style florals that bring warmth to a plain room; the wildflower design comes in eight colorways, from cream and white grounds to deep teal, forest green and black. The line floral and peony sketch papers are black ink drawings on white, which read as calm and graphic and suit modern furniture and white trim.

Dark grounds make a small room feel enclosed and cozy, while light grounds keep it open. If you are unsure, start with one wall behind a bed or a desk, where the print frames the furniture instead of filling the whole room.

How many rolls you need

Most rolls here are 17.3 in (44 cm) wide and 9.8 ft (3 m) long, and the champagne rose roll is 15.7 in (40 cm) wide. One roll gives one full strip on a wall up to about 9 ft tall, with a little left over for matching the pattern.

Measure the width of the wall in inches and divide by the roll width, then round up. A wall 10 ft (120 in) wide takes 7 rolls of a 17.3 in paper, or 8 rolls of the 15.7 in rose paper. Add one more roll for mistakes and later repairs, and order every roll for one room at the same time so the print color matches. Our measure and make guide walks through measuring around windows and doors.

Walls it suits

Peel and stick wallpaper needs a smooth, clean, dry wall. Satin or eggshell paint that has cured for at least two weeks is ideal. It does not hold well on textured walls, fresh paint, bare drywall, old wallpaper or anywhere damp. Keep it out of showers and off the wall right behind a stove.

If you want texture rather than print, our peel and stick wall panels add raised brick, stone and travertine.

Putting it up

Wipe the wall with a damp cloth and let it dry. Draw a plumb line with a level about one roll width from a corner, because corners are rarely straight. Hang the first strip against the line, leaving 2 in spare at the top and bottom, then trim with a sharp knife against a straight edge. Butt each next strip against the last, matching the pattern, and press the seam flat.

Taking it down

Lift a corner and peel slowly at a low angle, close to the wall. On sound paint it comes away cleanly. On weak or chalky paint some paint can come with it, so if you rent, try a small piece in a hidden spot first and leave it for a few days.

Questions

Does peel and stick wallpaper damage walls?

Not on sound, well-cured paint, where it peels away cleanly if you pull slowly at a low angle. It can lift weak, chalky or freshly painted surfaces, so test a small piece in a hidden spot first, especially in a rented home.

Can I use it in a bathroom or kitchen?

On walls away from direct water and heat, yes: a powder room, the wall beside a vanity or a dining nook. Keep it out of showers and off the wall behind a stove, since steam and heat weaken the adhesive.

Will it stick to textured walls?

Not reliably. The adhesive needs full contact, and on orange-peel or knockdown texture it only touches the high points and can lift over time. A skim coat or a smooth primer first solves this.

Can I reposition a strip?

Yes, while you hang it. Lift the strip gently and lay it again within the first few minutes. Once it has been smoothed down and left for a day, the bond is much stronger and pulling it can stretch the vinyl.

Can I use it on furniture?

Yes. Dresser fronts, cabinet doors, shelf backs and old side tables are popular uses. Clean the surface well, cut pieces slightly oversize and trim them in place with a sharp knife.
