Frosted, patterned or mirror

Privacy film comes in two families that behave very differently.

Frosted film scatters light. The view through it turns into soft shapes and colors in both directions, by day and at night, so it is the safe choice for bathrooms, bedrooms and front doors. Plain frost gives the most even cover. Patterned frost, like stripes or a diamond lattice, mixes frosted and clear areas, so it decorates the glass and screens it partly.

Mirror film, also called one-way film, reflects light. Whichever side of the glass is brighter sees a mirror, and the darker side sees through. On a bright day you look out while people outside see their own reflection, and the room stays cooler with less glare on screens. After dark, with your lights on, the effect reverses and people outside can see in, so mirror film needs curtains or blinds for the evening.

Which one for which room

  • Bathroom, shower or powder room: plain frosted film. It screens day and night.
  • Front door side lights and glass doors: frosted or lattice film, for privacy with some decoration.
  • Street-facing living room or home office: mirror film for daytime privacy and less glare, with curtains at night. Frosted film if you want privacy without thinking about it.
  • Kitchen, hallway, glass cabinet doors: stripes or lattice, where breaking up the view is enough.

Measuring and roll sizes

Measure each pane of glass inside the frame, not the frame itself. Choose a roll at least 1.5 in (4 cm) wider than the pane, so you can trim a clean edge. Longer rolls cover several panes of the same width, one after the other. The calculator on each film's page works out how many rolls your panes need.

Our rolls run from 15.7 in (40 cm) to 59.8 in (152 cm) wide, and 9.8 ft to 32.8 ft long, so even a patio door can be covered without a seam.

Fitting static cling and wet-applied film

All of these films go on wet. Clean the glass, spray it with water and a drop of dish soap, lay the film on and slide it into place. Squeegee from the middle outward to push the water and bubbles out, trim the edges with a sharp knife and squeegee again. Any haze dries out within a few days. Our measure and make guide goes through it step by step, and Which window film gives the most privacy? compares the finishes in more detail.

Glass it suits

Window film needs smooth, flat, clean glass on the inside of the window. It will not hold on textured, patterned or already frosted glass. On double-pane windows, Low-E glass or very large panes in full sun, check the window manufacturer's guidance first, especially with dark mirror tints.

Questions

Which privacy film works at night?

Frosted film, plain or patterned. It blurs the view in both directions at any time of day. Mirror film only gives privacy while it is brighter outside than inside, so at night with your lights on people can see in.

Does privacy film make a room dark?

Frosted film lets most of the daylight through and softens it. Mirror film darkens the room a little, more with black or charcoal tints and less with silver, green or gold.

Will window film damage my windows?

Not on ordinary single glass. On double-pane windows, coated glass or big panes in strong sun, dark films raise the glass temperature, so check the window manufacturer's guidance before you install them.

Can I take the film down when I move?

Yes. Lift a corner and peel. Static cling films leave nothing behind, and any residue from a wet-applied mirror film comes off with soapy water and a plastic scraper.

How do I avoid bubbles?

Use plenty of soapy water on the glass and the film, and squeegee from the center out in overlapping strokes. Small cloudy patches are trapped water and dry out over a few days.
