One roll of PVC film with wide frosted stripes and narrow clear gaps between them. It fixes to glass with water and static cling and peels off clean. Choose 17.7 or 21.7 in wide, in 9.8 or 16.4 ft lengths.
Stripes give medium privacy. From a few steps away the frosted bands hide most of the view, so a desk, a sofa or a kitchen counter behind the glass reads as soft shapes. Close to the glass you can see through the clear gaps, and so can someone outside. That makes stripes a good fit for home offices, kitchens, glass doors between rooms and street windows where you want to break up the view rather than block it. For a bathroom, choose our Matte White Frosted Window Film instead.
The stripes run across the width of the roll. Fitted straight from the roll, they run horizontally, like a blind. Turn the cut piece 90 degrees and they run vertically, which makes a low window look taller. On a wide pane that you cover in vertical stripes, cut the pieces to the height of the glass and line them up side by side.
Measure the glass inside the frame. Pick a roll at least 1.5 in (4 cm) wider than the pane, so you can trim a clean edge. A 17.7 in x 16.4 ft roll covers four panes about 16 in wide and 47 in tall. The calculator on this page counts the rolls for your panes.
Clean the glass and spray it with water and a drop of dish soap. Peel the film from its backing, spray the back of the film and lay it on the glass. Before you squeegee, check the stripes against the frame with a level or a tape measure, because a stripe that runs off level shows more than a plain film would. Squeegee from the center out, trim the edges with a sharp knife and squeegee again.
On a row of panes, start every piece at the same stripe so the bands line up from one pane to the next. Our measure and make guide covers the method in full.
Smooth, flat glass indoors: windows, glass doors and glass partitions. It will not hold on textured or patterned glass and is not for car windows. On double-pane windows or coated glass, check the window manufacturer's guidance first.
Up close, yes. The clear gaps are narrow, so from a few steps away the view behind the glass breaks up into soft shapes, but someone standing at the window can look through a gap.
Yes. Cut a piece to the height of your glass, turn it so the stripes run up and down, and fit pieces side by side across a wide pane, lining up the stripes at each join.
Not on its own. The clear gaps let some view through, so for a bathroom choose a plain frosted film, which blurs the whole pane day and night.
Yes, the stripes do the same job at night as by day, because frosted film scatters light rather than reflecting it. The clear gaps stay clear at any time.
