What this film is

Blackout privacy window film is a PVC sheet with an embossed, opaque surface. Once it is on the glass, you cannot see through it from either side. The room stays private in the daytime and at night, and the glass no longer shows what is inside.

The film also works on light and heat. It blocks sun, darkens the room, adds a layer of heat insulation and filters UV. That makes it a fit for bedrooms, bathrooms, street-facing windows and any glass door where you want full cover.

It holds on with static cling. There is no glue on the back, so you do not need adhesive or tools beyond a spray bottle, a squeegee and a knife. When you want it gone, it peels off without residue.

Sizes

The film comes in 12 sizes across three widths. Pick the roll that covers your glass with a little extra for trimming.

Size
11.8 x 39.4 in (30 x 100 cm)
11.8 x 78.7 in (30 x 200 cm)
11.8 x 118.1 in (30 x 300 cm)
11.8 x 196.9 in (30 x 500 cm)
17.7 x 39.4 in (45 x 100 cm)
17.7 x 78.7 in (45 x 200 cm)
17.7 x 118.1 in (45 x 300 cm)
17.7 x 196.9 in (45 x 500 cm)
21.7 x 39.4 in (55 x 100 cm)
21.7 x 78.7 in (55 x 200 cm)
21.7 x 118.1 in (55 x 300 cm)
21.7 x 196.9 in (55 x 500 cm)

Measure the full glass pane, not just the frame opening. Add about 1 in (2.5 cm) to each side so you can trim a clean edge. If your window is wider than 21.7 in (55 cm), you can run two rolls side by side and butt the seams together.

How to fit it

  1. Clean the glass with water and a lint-free cloth. Let it dry. Any dust or grease will show under the film.
  2. Cut the film about 1 in (2.5 cm) larger than the pane on all sides.
  3. Fill a spray bottle with water and a drop of mild soap. Wet the glass well.
  4. Peel the film from its backing. Wet the back too, so it does not stick to itself.
  5. Place the film on the wet glass. Slide it until the edges are even.
  6. Squeegee from the center out. Push the water and air to the edges.
  7. Trim the overhang with a sharp knife against a straight edge.
  8. Wipe the surface dry and check for bubbles. Small ones fade as the film dries over a few days.

Work on one pane at a time. On cold days, warm the room first so the film stays soft and easy to handle. The film fits flat single or double glazing. Do not use it on curved, textured or wired glass.

Care and removal

Wipe the film with a soft cloth and water. A mild soap is fine. Skip abrasive pads, strong solvents and rough brushes, since they can dull the embossed surface.

To remove the film, lift a corner with your fingernail or a plastic card and pull it back slowly. The static cling releases clean, and no glue is left behind. Any haze on the glass wipes off with water.

If you want to store a piece for later, roll it with the backing sheet facing out and keep it flat. The film can be reused as long as the surface stays clean and free of creases.

Questions

Does this film block the view both ways?

Yes. The opaque surface gives full privacy, so you cannot see in or out through the glass. It is a blackout film, not a one-way mirror.

Do I need glue or tools to install it?

No glue is needed. The film holds on with static cling, so you only need water, a spray bottle, a squeegee and a knife for trimming.

Will it come off without leaving residue?

Yes. Lift a corner and peel the film back slowly. It releases clean and leaves no sticky residue on the glass.

What kind of glass does it fit?

It fits flat single or double glazing. Do not use it on curved, textured or wired glass.
