The pattern

Each tile is a 27.6 x 27.6 in (70 x 70 cm) sheet of white foam embossed with a grid of squares: some carry a scrolled floral medallion, others a small inset square in a contrasting color. Where tiles meet, the grid continues, so a ceiling reads as one coffered surface rather than separate squares. Choose the accent color: Gold, Red, Purple, Green or Blue.

Why foam on a ceiling

Foam is the lightest way to give a ceiling texture. The tiles weigh very little, so the self-adhesive back holds them overhead on a sound, clean surface, and they cut easily around lights and vents. They also hide hairline cracks and old stains without any plastering.

How many packs

One pack covers 52.7 sq ft (4.9 m²). A 10 x 12 ft bedroom ceiling is 120 sq ft, or 132 sq ft with 10% for cuts, so 3 packs. Large tiles mean fewer seams and faster progress than small panels.

Fitting overhead

  • Switch off the power before you work near light fittings, and take off any covers.
  • Clean the ceiling and let it dry. Dust and flaking paint stop the adhesive from gripping.
  • Find the center of the room and mark two crossing lines. Start the first tile there, so the pattern sits evenly and the cut tiles end up at the walls.
  • Peel the backing, place the tile and press across its whole face with a flat hand or a soft roller.
  • Butt each tile tight to the last, matching the grid.
  • Cut around fixtures with a sharp knife, then refit the covers.

A helper makes overhead work much easier, one holding the tile and one pressing, and so does a sturdy step ladder.

On walls too

The same tiles make a striking feature wall, above a bed or behind a dining table. On a wall, start from a level line near the floor and work upward.

Care

Dust with a soft brush or the brush tool of a vacuum. Keep the tiles away from heat: hot bulbs, heaters and stoves. On weak or chalky paint, taking them down can pull paint away, so test a hidden spot first.

Questions

Will foam tiles stay up on a ceiling?

On a clean, dry, sound ceiling, yes. The tiles are very light, so the adhesive holds them overhead. Press each one firmly across its whole face, and do not fit them over flaking paint, popcorn texture or damp patches.

Can I use them around ceiling lights?

Yes, around fixtures that stay cool, such as LED lights. Cut a neat opening and leave a small gap around the fixture. Keep foam well away from hot bulbs and from recessed spotlights that run hot.

Do the tiles show seams?

The pattern is a grid of squares, so the seams fall along grid lines and are hard to spot from the floor. Butt the tiles tight and press the edges so they sit flush.

How big is each tile?

Each tile is 27.6 x 27.6 in (70 x 70 cm). Ten tiles cover 52.7 sq ft (4.9 m²), so a 10 x 12 ft ceiling takes 3 packs with room for cuts.
